Tourism in Budapest since Covid: Statistics 2021 – 2023

The overnight stays of both domestic and foreign guests in Budapest will have fully recovered from the slump caused by the Covid pandemic by 2023 at the latest. The fact that well over 5 million overnight stays were still achieved in 2021 has primarily to do with domestic tourism.
In 2023, there were over 14 million overnight stays in Budapest alone, out of 41.8 million overnight stays in Hungary.
The data comes from National Statistics Office.
Number of overnight accommodations over the last few years, broken down by type of accommodation: hotels vs. private accommodations (usually this concerns short-term rental á la Airbnb).
In this comparison, due to the dynamic growth of private accommodation, a parity seems to be on the horizon in the next few years, as the proportion of hotel beds in the total inventory has fallen from almost 60% to 54%, even if it has still increased in absolute numbers.
